Gut health refers to the balance and proper functioning of the gastrointestinal system, the manner in which our gut digests and absorbs nutrients, and the community of microorganisms (referred to as the microbiome). These factors are vital to our overall health including the health of our hair and scalp.
But why is gut health so important to me as a healthy hair coach?
Not only is gut health a game changer when it comes to managing our total body wellness, (ie, our immune system, weight management, heart health, brain health, you name it) but it is also a key component when it comes to having a healthy scalp and a head full of healthy hair. At a minimum, the gut needs to function properly for the vitamins, minerals, and proteins necessary for healthy hair and scalp to exist.
As a healthy hair coach, I can only do so much. I can advise, I can trim, I can condition, and I can control heat but once you leave the salon or after our on-line session, the matter of healthy hair and scalp are up to you. Are you protecting your hair from the environment? Are you limiting heat exposure and using the recommended products? Are you managing what you put in your body and how your body functions? Are you drinking your water? And now add to that… Are you maintaining a healthy gut?
I have researched and collected information over the years that concludes with if we are not taking care of ourselves from the inside out, the outward will give us the little indicators (hair loss, and thinning, rashes, and visible inflammation) before major problems arise. Before you proceed further on my site, please don’t just focus on your hair, focus on your total health.
Here is where I suggest you watch an easy-to-understand documentary on Netflix entitled “Hack Your Health: The Secrets of your Gut.” Once you do that, revisit my page and I can help walk you through a simple gut health plan that can get you going in the right direction. Until then, read through the FAQ’s to get some insight. Gut health can be a challenge, or it can be easy…I can show you how to make it easy.
Gut health influences hair and scalp health through nutrient absorption, inflammation control, and hormonal regulation. A healthy gut ensures efficient absorption of essential vitamins and minerals required for hair growth and scalp health. Additionally, a balanced gut microbiome helps reduce inflammation and maintain hormonal balance, both of which are crucial for healthy hair and scalp.
Yes, poor gut health can contribute to hair loss. Imbalances in the gut microbiome can lead to nutrient deficiencies, inflammation, and hormonal imbalances, all of which can negatively impact hair growth and scalp condition. Conditions like leaky gut syndrome can exacerbate these issues, leading to hair thinning and loss.
Essential nutrients for healthy hair include biotin, vitamins A, C, D, and E, zinc, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. The gut absorbs these nutrients from the food we eat. A healthy gut lining and balanced microbiome are critical for the efficient absorption of these vitamins and minerals, which then support hair growth and scalp health.
Inflammation is the body’s response to a threat such as injury, infection, or irritation. It appears as redness, swelling, heat, and/or pain in the affected area. In the scalp, inflammation can occur from several factors such as psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and eczema, allergic reactions from products, fungal or bacterial infections of the scalp, and/or hairstyling practices.
Persistent inflammation of the scalp can disrupt the hair follicles' normal function, potentially contributing to hair loss or inhibited hair growth. Chronic inflammation may exacerbate existing scalp conditions, making them more difficult to manage. Therefore, it's essential to address scalp inflammation promptly. As a healthy hair coach, I suggest not only attacking these conditions externally with products, but internally as well through gut health.
Imagine the hair follicle being squeezed so tightly due to scalp inflammation that a young strand of hair cannot push its way out. If the inflammation is not addressed, the young strand will eventually die-off and a new strand will eventually try to grow until it basically runs out of tries. As the hair runs out of tries, alopecia then becomes the diagnosis.
Alopecia is the term used for hair loss. There are different types of alopecia ranging from temporary to permanent.
Candida yeast and Malassezia are fungi that appear as scaly inflamed patches. These patches are often itchy and flaky looking rash on your scalp.
I cannot begin to count the times clients have brought in prescription shampoo (Ketoconazole) that they received from their dermatologist in order to address what laymen refer to as dandruff. This pink shampoo does help to kill off the fungi, but it is usually limited to a week-to-week improvement. If you truly want to attack the fungi, you have to work from the inside out.
Yes, probiotics can help improve hair and scalp health. Probiotics support a healthy gut microbiome, which can enhance nutrient absorption, reduce inflammation, and balance hormones—all factors that contribute to healthy hair and scalp. Including probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi in your diet can be beneficial.
Yes, several foods can promote both gut and hair health:
Gut health is based on the balance of the gut microbiome. Getting the right amount of good bacteria vs bad bacteria is truly a balancing act. People obtain degrees behind researching how to make this happen, so in a nutshell, you must ingest foods and/or supplements that bring in the good bacteria and rid your body of the bad. If you do not care for probiotic rich foods or you are not getting a consistently effective amount every day, it is imperative that you supplement with not just a quality probiotic, but also a prebiotic and a gentle waste/toxin remover.
Hydration is crucial for both gut and hair health. Adequate water intake ensures proper digestion and nutrient absorption in the gut, which directly impacts the health of your hair. Dehydration can lead to dry, brittle hair and an unhealthy scalp, while a well-hydrated body supports strong, healthy hair growth. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight or at least 72 oz per day.
Yes, antibiotics can affect hair and scalp health. While they are necessary for treating bacterial infections, antibiotics can disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome. This disruption can lead to poor nutrient absorption and increased inflammation, potentially causing hair thinning and scalp issues. It's important to use antibiotics only when prescribed by a healthcare professional and consider taking probiotics to restore gut balance.
Pro means good, bio means life, and anti means against or none, so probiotics support life and beneficial microorganisms, while antibiotics work against bacteria and can reduce or eliminate them.
Visible improvements in hair and scalp health after choosing to improve your gut health can take several months. Hair grows at a rate of about half an inch per month, so it may take time to notice the visible changes. Consistently maintaining a healthy diet, managing stress, and supporting your gut health will gradually lead to healthier hair and scalp.
It is important to remember that gut health isn’t a one time solution, it is an ongoing process just like maintaining good oral health.
